For the 2016/17 season FREEHOLD SOCCER LEAGUE (FSL) will follow the US SOCCER directive regarding the age group changes and small-sided game play.

As many of you are already aware, U.S. Soccer has mandated a number of changes to how youth soccer is played in our country.  One of the first and main initiatives being implemented is the grouping of players by calendar birth years to align with international standards and Youth National Team programs.  The two governing bodies that issue our player cards, NJYS and US Club, will follow these guidelines starting with the 2016-17 season.

In addition, the leagues in which many member FSL teams compete in (MOSA, JAGS, MAPS, EDP, etc) are conforming to the directive focused on the number of players on the field.

Please see the chart below.

FSL will continue to allow players to play up, as we have done in the past.  This may mean that a player may need to attend 2 tryouts (their new age group and the age group above).

FSL Board of Directors spent many hours consulting with the governing bodies for soccer in NJ as well as numerous other programs in the area.  While change requires everyone to adjust in the short term, our implementation approach to the US Soccer mandate is consistent with the guidance from the leagues we participate in as well as other top programs in the area with a similar focus on player development.
